Ok, I've ascertained that these are a limited run by some special makers/jewellers, normally made when they get their hands on some cases from a major manufacturer. My question is: How do you find out about them, and do you know of any that are for sale?

This may not be what you want but prototypes to me are the preproduction runs of watches, cases, and etc. Large manufactures do sample runs the larger tend to do larger runs so that tooling and techniques can be refined, and everyone gets to complain about this or that in the board room and beat up the designers. Getting any of the prototype's can be hit and miss, most of the defective stuff is scraped but you never know in the days of the INTERNET. A lot of designers will not do a full mock up of one. They will change markings on the dials or the companies logo, but dials are the most common to alter to designate it as a early run proto.. Once the contracts are fully completed and everyone is as happy as they can be one last run is done that is 1 to 1 and is identical to production piece. Hope it helped
