Here in Western Washington most years by now it is just loads of rain and sometimes is nice Spring time weather. For the past several days here we have had a jump back to Winter. Right now it is snowing here. Yea so crazy. But very beautiful. :) How about your neck of the woods so to speak? |

Well Skip I think you are opening a can of worms. As the forums damn near only liberal I just am going to point out that once a month we have a post regarding how "crazy" the weather is... Then I make a comment on how it just might be resaonable to assume our global climate is changing... Now you can all pile on and laugh... Who will be laughing 25 years from now? None of us I am afraid. Have at it boys! |

About the weather: It's raining in Vancouver just 2 hours drive from Bellingham. About the Paxman's statement...I'm afraid he's right. Last edited on Sun Mar 30th, 2008 11:52 am by Simon_Leung |

Hay Pax the topic keeps surfacing for we love to see your view and then have fun picking on you. I guess they can pick on me too. something I have been following along with for over 20 years and do see a obvious set of events showing mother nature ain't to happy. :? |

I'm not convinced. Their's 2 sides to that story, and both have very valid points. As far as the weather goes here, it's pretty damn near 100 already. Mostly in the high 90s, but has hit a 100 a couple of times. To throw fuel on the fire, I'm told it's getting HOT a tad early this year:). |

Argue all you want, but there is no denying that the Polar caps are melting and the world's glaciers are retreating. That our planet is warming is a fact. The causes may be debateable but "the times they are a changen!":?:?:? |

The thing is that world leaders and the scientist are not pointing out well enough that there is a whole host of causes natural and man made. And it is nothing new if you take a close look at geological history. The Media has just hyped it up and in the wrong way. :? |

Still, without being political, if there are things we can do to help delay the trend torward warming, why not? To continue consuming the earth's resources at a reckless rate robs our children and only enriches those who already are consumed by greed. The battle in the Mideast is about more than religion or tribalism. Its also about who will controll our dwindling resources. Its Time for some Tech Talk about alternatives to fossil fuels. |

Agree 100% Edgel. The Tech is here now to change it. It is the greed getting in the way. :? |

There are things that can be done. Convert your home to a combination of solar and wind power. Can you afford to do that? I know I can't at this point in my life. I hope to build a home someday and incorporate these things. Do you drive a Prius or some other such hybrid vehicle? I don't and probably won't. Those vehicles are just as bad for the environment as a gas guzzling suv. They actually generate more pollution producing just one of those, than it takes to produce a Jeep Cherokee. Additionally, what about those batteries that have to be replaced every 3 to 7 years? There's a recycling nightmare right there. I don't say these things as an attack. I'm merely using them to illustrate the pitfalls of some of the courses of action that could be taken. I personally am a big believer in the wind/sun power thing. There are plenty of examples of people who have done that and have NO dependence on the power companies. They even get paid by the power companies, because the excess they generate in their homes is fed back into the power supply. |

I'm on your side of the political spectrum Mark. I happen to think that it is a combination of natural cycles and human influences, and that the human influence has sped up the natural cycle. What cracks me up is those who hear about a cold winter, or a lot of snow, and think it's an argument against global warming. I happen to think that global warming doesn't automatically mean that everyplace is going to be warmer all the time, but rather that more heat in a place that doesn't always get it will disrupt weather patterns, leading to higher snowfalls in some places, colder winters in others, or bigger hurricanes/tsunamis, etc. JMHO. OK pile on, I think Mark's got my back here smile8.gif |

I'm not any tree hugging Al Gore lover by any means but I do think we as a race of creatures living on this planet are quite potentially hastening and influencing natural patterns. Of course, who cares? We'll all be dead by then!face4.gif |

Well PAX, I always enjoy your political view point; it provides a bit of humor to my day...not to mention a total relief from reality!!!:D Okay, let me hear your slant on the new changing of the terminology from Global warming to Global Climate Change because the real science doesn't support the warming issue...also interested in how psuedo-science changed it forecast from a new ice age to global warming in a mere 30 years. Yes, I know algore won the Nobel Peace prize, but I consider him as much of a scientist as I consider Yasser Arafat a pundit for peace on his Nobel Award. It is a great emotional issue (which is why politicians use it), but the long term fact don't support it...and no, I don't think the earth is flat! BTW, Gores carbon footprint is bigger than he is! As to energy and power consumption, if the politicians were serious about it, we would be drilling in Anwar (screw the Caribou...they will not be harmed or deprived, and even if they were, they are not more important than man), we would be allowed to drill in the Gulf of Mexico, where, the Mexicans just happen to be drilling. we would be drilling off the straits of Florida as the Cubans plan to do...we would drill off the coast off California (screw the view of the phony Hollywood elite)...and more importantly, we would abandon fossil fuel consumption for power plant and convert to Nuclear Energy as most of Europe has...but no, you liberal environmentalist wont lets us do any of that. End of Rant |

Ken... what took you so long? Believe me, I am no liberal enviromentalist... my carbon footprint is impressive!! I can't argue with your points and won't. They only thing that really made me think was trying to remember that other thing al Gore won besides the Nobel? Now what was that??face4.gif |

There is something to the fact man has altered the climate somewhat ........ but there have been ice ages and warming trends, as well as dramatic changes to the earth like the continents dividing, all without the help of man ..... man is not as significant as we think when it comes to mother earth .... if we were wiped out it would take a few hundred years to eliminate our mark ..... just my 2 cents |

Ahhh.. global warming. Ya know, if we would have listened to the preachers of this religion called environmentalism back in the late seventies, we would be in a world of crap. I seem to remember on the cover of time magazine "THE COMING ICE AGE" Where would we be now if we tried to head that off? Did you hear the polar caps are shrinking on Mars? I guess we have something to do with that. Guess what the 2 planets have in common? THE SUN. It goes through 11 year cycles of increased solar flare activity. When that happens guess what? Increased heat. There are HUNDREDS of years of oil available and believe it or not, there are still fossils being converted to oil. We can responsibly drill for oil without a major impact on the environment. If we would just drill for the oil that is there and build some new refineries to keep up with he demand then the prices wouldnt be so high. I also agree that nuclear power is a way to go. As for hybrids, they are a scam. Being in the auto trade let me tell you about them. If you need heat, the gas engine has to run. If you need A/C, the gas engine has to run. If you travel at high speeds, the gas engine has to run. Only if you live where the temp is 70* year round and drive less than 45 mph, then a hybrid is for you. Also according to osha law. To work on one 2 techs must be present. First a 6 foot perimeter must be set up. Then the tech working on the car inside the perimeter. Then a tech with a 6 foot fiberglass pole with a hook on the end to pull the other guy off the car if he is getting electrocuted. Not to mention the little light on the dash that tells you to pull over and exit the car that it is ready to melt down. Yea, Ill take 2. Finally for this kyoto treaty. If the enviros were really seriuos about pollution, why isnt China required to follow the same rules? Its all about crushing capitalism... and who is capitalism? The U.S.A. Sorry for the long rant, I saw others post and I had to get my 2 cents in. |
