I'm waiting to see what goes on the market as far as brands and deals this Fall. :) Just got a new DVD player Xmas 2004 so no major rush to update/upgrade but if a crazy good deal pops up well I'll move the DVD to the spare room. LOL :D Everything I have seen on Blu-Ray looks cool and my kid brother is already looking for a good deal. ;) What ever I get I want it to have full record ability and backward compatible to regular DVD also and with up-convert HD. :cool:

I agree that up-convert is a great feature. That's a feature you should also look for in your amp/receiver, assuming you want that component to become "command central". I don't think you'll have to in general terms worry about backwards compatibility. I say general, because I have found as an owner that there is an issue with the high end dts remix audio discs that play flawlessly on dvd but not so much on blu-ray. Will do a separate post on that. Have had no issues with playing dvd's, and in fact they do look a bit better. I would also insist on hdmi connection, and the ability to read deep color. Deep color isn't prevalent yet, but it stands a good chance of becoming. Am currently using the Panasonic DMP-BD30, and am overall very happy.

A tip for those who may have, like myself, enjoyed collecting the dts and/or dolby digital 5.1 audio discs released over the last 10 years or so. While they played flawlessly on dvd players, I have found that such is not necessarily the case with blu-ray. In my case I am currently using the Panasonic DMP-BD30, so I can't say this is necessarily true of all machines. The bug is that the machine does not react to menu requests and sometimes won't bring up the menu at all. I have found however, that these discs work much better, though not perfectly, on my HD player (yes, I bought both). While HD is of course now defunct, am keeping my player around just to play these audio discs via an hdmi connection. If anyone out there is encountering a similar situation with their audio discs/blu ray situation, am sure someone is giving away their HD machine, and it could be a very viable solution for you.

I have a question. Do I understand there is now a Blue Ray music CD as well as DVD? Are Blue Ray discs significantly more expensive that regular DVDs?

if there is an "audio only" I am unaware of it. In case this is the source of confusion, the audio discs I referred to earlier are high end high resolution audio discs published on dvd medium. They are largely remixes from the master tracks of various albums, taking advantage of both the three dimensions of 5.1 audio, plus the higher resolution audio supported by the dvd disc. Sadly the idea never really took off outside of us audiophiles, and am not sure many are being made now, which has also driven the price on many of them way up (the Foreigner and ELP discs are now 100 dollars or more) but there are some really great offerings out there. Does blu-ray cost more? yes, though I've found many titles on ebay and the like for far less than list. And the performance, features, and look vastly exceeds dvd.
