Looks as thought my trusty Canon SD300 is about to crap out. I am now unable to zoom out after zooming in. Kind of frustrating. Rather than forking over any dough to get it fixed I am interested in upgrading to a new camera. What I would really like is a big ass digital SLR but I don't want to drop that much coin at this point. I'm asking for your thoughts and suggestions to meet the following requirments.

At least 5MP
As much optical zoom as possible... preferably 10X or 12X
Rechargeable battery (Lithium Ion)
Long battery life
Stores to an SD card

Please reply with suggestions and thoughts.
I would like to keep this budget minded too.

Thanks in advance for your time,

Pax

My budget is as cheap as possible? I don't know if I am ready to go full DSLR or just SLR like as cuz CJ suggests with the Sony.

A quick search on new egg netted this which meets my prerequsities.

What do you think?

What is a good (read cheap) price for a full blown DLSR?

Is there such an animal?  As Canada mentioned-- a yeoman like camera = basic????

I don't think I care about zooming in or out at this point.  I'm a pro with a Brownie and disposable regular thingies, but have never had a digital.  You should see those pics--you'd be green with envy.......rofl  :D

Help Paxman, then moi.

Man, that's tough. About 5 blls with lens and the Panasonic is 3 bills. am I even gonna be able to use an SLR after using my point and click Canon or am I over extendiing myself? Is the 2 bills worth the DSLR vs SLR like? Am i asking too many questions?

I am confused...

Good question Mark!...a prosumer digi-cam is easier to use versus a DSLR imho :)...the Panasonic is a great cam...I fought with the same questions before taking a step towards a DSLR which I am still learning...but I'm no shutterbug and Macro photography is tough enough :P All of my wrist shots and many of my macros are still done with my fuji S9000 prosumer/fixed lens....but as I learn the DSLR and what settings work best I can say the overall results are much better imho....You have to go with what you feel comfortable with and especially what You will get the best use out of as an all around cam....choosing a cam with Macro mode is essential for Watch Pics(in any price range tny)hand6.gif I tend to use my Fuji more as an all around cam for the ease of use ...plus it is a 9.1 mega pixel 12x zoom that has a ton of features for all conditionshand6.gif Owning a DSLR doesn't automatically make your pics better....the person behind the lens still has to have knowledge, experience, and patience !...where using a prosumer digi-cam can give great results immediately in a point and shoot in which case I would grab the Panasonic for a great price that has all the features you may be looking for(image stabilization is also important on a cam)Camera_photos.gijmho Man, that's tough. for others here is a good site for cameras.  http://www.completephotousa.com   very good buys.  also minolta has given up on digital cameras and  has sold to sony so they are liquidating all the maxxum D7 and D5 digitals.  the D7 is a high grade camera.  interchangeable lenses new cost was 1500.00 .  wally world is selling them off for 499.00.  that is a real bargain.  also pentax K10d is the ultimate camera coming out in november.  list is 899.00  all pentax lenses are able to be used on it.  that is right all.  most digital cameras need a special lense to use on it not pentax.  pentax is having a big sale on lenses now too as they usually do with 100.00 off on most.  it is 10mp or better camera with stability control in three axis.  also the site above has many canon and nikkon cameras .   good luck shopping.

Hey Mark, if you want a good one, I recommend Panasonic FZ20 to start with. Though there are upgraded version like FZ30 and FZ30, the FZ20 is quite good for its price and packed with SUPER features. Just look at Pacifichrono's pics!!! ;););)

Ok still not convinced???? Here are a few of pics taken when I had the FZ20:

Fantastic shots. I looked at the Panasonic but went with a Kodak. I decided to stay in a moderate price range until I am ready to amke the jum to full DSLR. In the time being I have been pretty pleased with the result of the Kodak. I still have a lot to learn and am the weakest link when it comes to taking pix. Example below... how about giving the crystal a good wipe!!

Well Mark, you need to practice and practice and PRACTICE. I did that and get the most out of the Panasonic and hence I upgraded to CANON Digital Rebel XT after could not find it (FZ20) could give me more!

I am surprised that the FZ20 is hard to find in stores now cos of the FZ30 and the FZ50 in production.

Nevertheless, there is a good shot to start with. But you must play around with the F stops too. Remember the more(higher) the F stops, the more vivd is the surrounding. As for this shot of yours, you are using F2.8. Try using higher F stops, it will bring out the other details too!

And here is the same pic that I tried to get rid of the reflection:
