1. Swiss quartz - Reliable. Low maintanence. Low priced watches 2. Swiss ETA mechanical - Robust. Its mehcanical. High priced watches. 3. Japan mechanical - Reliable. Its mechanical. Mid priced watches. So guys. Given the criteria, which is your ideal choice? Any bad feedbacks on Japanese mechanical movements? Best Anders |

My vote went to Japanese mechanical. Based on the quality of Seikos, Orients, and, of course, the Miyota movement, I feel they offer a fantastic value when compared to the Swiss counterparts. Thanks- Marc |

hmm, tough choice....i guess all 3 of them have their place depending on the watch n the market target itself. There r watch snobs who only ever go for swiss mechanicals so having other movements coincidentaly rule them out. personally i dun mind either 3 but like marc i vote for japan mechanical cos im a tight arse n like afordable watches. lol. however that said...i gladly hand over good money if its a rare high decorated swiss movement. smile8.gifsmile8.gif chris |

Hi Anders In the past I would have said Swiss rite away. Not now. The Miyota is good solid movement and the price could be very reasonable. BUT It depends on the watch. and the target buyer. I would still vote for the Swiss Auto as my favorite. But overall quality of the watch build is more important. Also price point of the watch. JMHO Billy S. |

It all depends on the watch and the market for it. I have all 3. Swiss mechs have the movement snob appeal for lack of better term, japan mechs are every bit as good but oddly thought of as less luxurious? Seiko has many watches every bit as pricey as ETA equiped autos but aren't a luxury brand. I also like quartz for style fashion convenience. I voted for the Japan mech as best combo of value, mechanical appeal and durability. Now if only most of them would hand wind and hack |

I voted Swiss Mechanical. Does that make me a movement snob? Heck no!! I own and enjoy all three but my preference would be for the Swiss. Give me a Japanese movement that will hack and wind and still come in at a lower price point than the Swiss and I'll think twice... Oh... make it pretty too...uh-oh! Sounds like a Sumo!![]() |

I want a Swiss ETA mechanical movement if the price is right. Otherwise, a Japanese mechanical movement prefarably with hacking mechanism and can manual wind. |

It has to wind if it is mechanical/auto = Citizen Miyota. Quartz is also ok with me for Dievas Gas Tubes. Certainly you could drop a Miyota in a Noble or Endurance and not change the price too much. An oceantimer with a Miyota movement would be a hot item. Swiss Auto for the Vintage line is a must. |

Thank You guys for your input. Now we have a better idea. I know a lot of people voted for the Swiss Mechanical movements. But here is a scenario. For example our tritium watches. Will you prefer. 1) Swiss quartz at $300 2) Swiss Auto at $500 3) Japan Auto at $350 Best, Anders |

Those prices sounds fair, as long as im down with the overall watch design i will gladly buy. However from a marketing perspective, i reckon u'll expand your customer base with auto movements. People will pay that extra 50$ more for a miyota auto to a quartz. For example, in the oceantimer model u used the highgrade 955 series ETA quartz, not a lot out there appreciate the premium performance over the run-of-mill variety. Btw these r only my opinion based on wat i observe around the WIS forums, not actual watch retial experience. ![]() ![]() Regards chris |

anders213 wrote: Thank You guys for your input. Now we have a better idea. I'm in the minority here. I would actually prefer the $300 quartz with say a 10 year battery for a tritium watch. Or, I'd go for the $500 Swiss Auto. I like the convenience of the quartz with the gas tubes under $300. Over that, I'd want a simple 2824-2 in a closed case back. Simple, but nice. |

While we're talking suggestions for Dievas, how about a gas tube model with an alarm feature? :) I don't believe there is any competitor out there with one. It would be quartz of course. It could be with or without other complications (i.e. chrono, etc.). |

I'm with Mike on this one but wouldn't rule out a Japan auto in the $350. range either although I would prefer the Swiss eta 1st and foremost...call me a purist at heart!hearteyes.gif |

SWISS ETA for me...or a hacking/winding Japanese movement of the quality of a Seiko 6R15 or better! Also, either no date or quick set date! NO QUARTZ!!!!!!! |

What is everyone's take on the Miyota automatic movement? |

The 8205 and 8215 seem to be rather solid movements. Have not really had a chance to play much with any of the others. I'm a fairly solid auto or hand cranker guy. But autos is all I have experience with in this arena. ;) |

anders213 wrote: What is everyone's take on the Miyota automatic movement? I like them. They are rugged and accurate...that said, from a marketing/sales standpoint, you will find many that object to the fact that they are non-hacking. It is my understanding that Miyota has a hacking movement, but I have never seen one! |
