So, I recently picked up a Sea Devil, which is my first automatic, and I seem to be having a little trouble with it. I don't have a winder, so when I don't wear the Sea Devil, it stops, as it should. The problem is after I pick it up, set the time/date and put it on my wrist, it stops within a few minutes, then I have to reset it, and try again. Sometimes I can get it to keep running, but mostly it is just a cycle of stop, reset, and stop again. Am I winding it wrong? Does it need to be serviced? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

J....after setting the time and date the watch should be running. Push the crown in all the way and then rotate the crown counterclockwise 20 to 30 times. should give it a full charge. Keep in mind that that movements winds in the counterclockwise direction only. I hope that helps.

Tony - Thanks, this worked perfectly. I knew I was missing something and the extra turns after pushing the crown in worked. Michael - Tony meant turning the crown counterclockwise, so that the hands rotate clockwise. I figured out that one on my own. So I guess my Sea Devil will be getting more wrist time now that it can actually, you know, tell time. Thanks 3T!

Actually what Tony meant is the rotor only winds in the counter clockwise direction...the ETA 2824 winds in both directions...the importance of this is if you use a winder you must set it for counter clockwise winding

Once in a rare while, the mechanical watch should be turned back a little bit without the date being changed....maybe by 6 to 8 hours and then set forward again to the correct time. This is meant to slush around the lubricants that have always, always been slushed/pushed forward. My point is the lubricants also have to go back to ensure better lubrication. I learned this from a trustworthy research-heavy WIS:)
