Oscar I spent my teen years in Alabama. Age 12 to 18 and use to see those all the time. As young boys my older brother and I use to catch crickets and grasshoppers and toss them in the web and watch these big spiders go to work. Very big and strong webs. They will take care of many flying pest for you. They are in the family known as orb weaver spiders I think it's called. Very interesting to watch. ;)

Unbelievable!! I have had one on the back door of my garage for 3 days and have been observing and even nuturing it a bit. Its a bout 1/2 the size of yours and won't cooperate for a picture. comes out at night. I have been tossing food onto the web like you might Skip but she got a big moth on her own and sucked on it for a day. My wife hates it!!

When we were at Cub Scout camp in July we had a big spider take up residence on our canopy, pretty similar but orange and black, nice big web. I showed the Scouts and then tossed a Daddy Longlegs spider into the web. You should have seen that big old spider go to town. All that was left of the Daddy Longlegs was a single leg when it was finished. The kids thought it was the best thing ever, and they were still talking about it tonight at Cub Scout sign ups :D
