I have a Formex AS6500 (Valjoux GMT chrono) that will not wind. I got a local estimate of $275 to repair and clean, and needed 3 weeks to do the job... is that a fair estimate? I'm also considering having it re-lumed (Formex lume sucks).

I'm willing to ship to a trustworthy repairman, just need some advice on names and estimate range I should entertain.

Thanks all!!!

JD,

Should the need arise, I’ve bookmarked the following companies after reading quite a lot of great reviews of their work, as well as their customer service.

http://internationalwatchworks.com/

http://www.motorcitywatchworks.com/

Here’s a link to Tom Gref’s web site. I met Tom when he invited me over to his home to do a minor repair on my SD‘r. However after visiting with him and seeing how sterile his work room is, he may be worth a call. I don’t think he does re-luming though. (Tom's number is listed in his web site.  He works out of his home in Tucson, AZ).

I’m sure the group can give you a more in depth review on the above mentioned companies and or give you more recommendations.  Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Good Luck,

Lance

sounds like fair price from your local guy ... it would be nearby and done in 3 weeks..no shipping headaches or expenses are always a plus imho.ThumbsUp02.gif
..IWW,MCWW are 5 weeks min. and that may not include time needed to estimate and find the problem.
..as far as a relume Everest Watch Works is the best but you may be looking at up to 10 wks. there...
..did you jam the movement while setting the date by any chance?

Thank you all for your responses!!! It truly helps me make an informed decision.

Oagaspar, I had a feeling that the timeframe was pretty good, but wasn't too sure about the estimate, since the repairman didn't even open up the watch. Something just didn't seem right to me. As for the possibility of "jamming" the movement... I don't believe so, the watch stopped operating while sitting in my watch box for a long stretch of time.

If I'm going to go through the trouble of having this baby cracked-open for repairs, I might as well get the lume up to par also, so that's gonna narrow the options.

Again, thanks to my 3T brothers... good or bad, I shall post my decision and experience when the job is done.

"but wasn't too sure about the estimate, since the repairman didn't even open up the watch."

sounds like a good watchmaker..like many professionals he more than likely knew the cause or had an idea based on his experience......most watch repair guys consider auto chronographs as "not repair friendly"...if you are worried about the local watchmaker then below is someone who is highly recommended in the repair of Val.7750...but again does not do re-lumes....you may also want to shoot a pm to Chris aka OldeCrow here on 3T...he may know someone or he may even be able handle both.ThumbsUp02.gif
