Here are three broad categories of WIS that I have proposed, the "hoarder," the "collector," and the "enthusiast." There may be a little of us in each category, or we may fall mainly under one of them. There may be other categories in addition to these, but I have proposed them as generally and broadly as possible.
My thoughts about each:

1) The hoarders have huge numbers of watches, even having many of the exact same model, and could never sell any of them. And they keep acquiring more, with no real prospect of wearing most of them.

2)The collectors have various methods, but a hallmark of the collector is having specific categories, and seeking models that fit in those categories. A collector may, for example, want to have every variation of a particular model, or may want just one representative example of a particular model, and so on. A collector would sell a watch in order to get one he deems more desireable. He may have as many watches as a hoarder, but buying, selling, and trading is part of the satisfaction derived from the hobby.

3) The enthusiasts generally only keep the watches they they will wear, and part with the rest, even if that means parting with desireable models that may be a grail to a "collector." They buy, sell, and trade as though they are collectors, and possibly more frequently, but they eschew the idea of having a private museum of watches that see no wrist time.
****

Question is, where do you fit in?

Very interesting. I am trying to determine where I fit in. My collection is too young to pinpoint right now but I feel that I am a mix of enthusiast, and collector. I don't believe I will ever own a watch I would never wear.

I'd probably plug myself in as a 3 (enthusiast), but a 2-wannabe?  Maybe a 2.5?  :?

In some respects I fit under the "hoarder" and others in the "collector" category. I don't own any of the same watch in different colors. I wear every one, though some infrequently, they will all spend some time on my wrist. I have sold a few though far less than I have purchased. My collection is divers, chronographs and military type watches by Russian, Japanese, Swiss and Chinese manufacturers (except for my 2 Bulova Accutrons). :D

Cheers,
Griff

I guess I would be about on the cusp of being a collector/enthusiasts with hoarder tendencies for I do have particular target zones but so far all watches I have I also strap on every now and then too though. But I do have that main go too grouping of watches I wear the most. Also I rarely sell. I have traded off some quartz watches in the past. ;)

Hmmm. It's really hard for me to say at this time. I have so many models that I want because of the movement's and so many I want because of the style. Keeping in mind that I have 1 kid in collage. One who will be starting in one year I have to stay within a watch budget. What sucks is I'm so new at collecting that I want them all. Alas what's a guy to do?

I started out with a tendancy to hoard, and collect.  I was well on my way to owning every type of Promaster Eco Drive I could find.  Then I had an epiphany, and realized that this served no purpose in my life, and that I would rather seek out and covet special pieces that really speak to me, and pieces that I will wear on a regular basis.  This seems to bring me down to a number around 10 watches, which luckily I have room for in one watch box.  At times I'm up to 12 or 15, but then I'll cull the collection back down to 9 or 10.

The fact that I flipped the Orangina because it just wasn't for me, shows I'm an enthusiast, not a collector, as we all know that watch will be (or is) very collectable.

Great question by Kelly, one of the finest watch photographers I've seen.  If you get the chance to see his stuff on SCWF, you will agree.

When I was a kid, everyone Loved Flipper!  What happened?!

   .     .     .     .     .     .

I was so glad to see Kelly's post.  Having been disparaged as a fickle flipper!?.. it was a relief to find that I am in fact...

..an Enthusiast!  *(..sounds so much nicer, dontcha think?)

Always keep a couple of beaters around, usually have a couple of nice divers, and my pitfall is the couple of slightly Nicer divers I try to have on hand as well.  Those are the ones that raise the boss's  eyebrows.  As in.. " and how much did THAT cost!?"

While I'm not one to intentionally churn watches, I have been through more than just a few in search, not of Grail watches.. but in search of the ones that just really fit.  Fit my wrist... fit my lifestyle.. fit my wallet..

Too many other interests to "collect" watches per se.  Sure, if I parted w/ a few hotshot bicycles.. couple of motorcycles.. scads of musical instruments.. and a safefull of "noisemakers".. my consciense would allow a bunch (adjective.  precise southern term denoting volume or quantity) more divewatches.  But I've settled on a number, and that number is 6.  Got 6 slots in the box, work 6 days a week, not too many to justify to SWMBO (..and how many purses do you have again Dear?).. not too few for me... Just right!

*(okay.. maybe 7.. Box full and one on the wrist!)

Don't need any collectable watches, if it's too nice to wear & risk a ding or two.. it's too nice for me.  Don't need any status watches, if it's stainless w/ an ETA movement it's value tops out at a rough ceiling for me.  Not gonna pay an extra 15 or 25hundred for a name.. don't care what name it is!

SO.. I'm an Enthusiast!  Judging by the number of times I've used the term "catch & release" or CPR (catch, photograph, & release), maybe I'm a pretty hard core enthusiast... maybe even an overly-enthusiastic enthusiast.   But an enthusiast none the less!

At lease that's my story.. and I'm stickin With it!

lol how did I miss this topic!

I have seen what a watch horder looks like and I don't think even Oscar has it that bad! ( I haven't seen any Group shots showing the living room full from floor to ceiling anyway)

I think most of us don't really fall into any one category, I buy watches for lots of different reasons from "there was 30 seconds left on ebay and I was bored" (I surf the "ending today" list frequently just to scare people ;)) to "your collection isn't complete without one" (I discovered my collection is just fine without a Monster in it ;))

I am often torn between what I want and what is offered, I want day/date watches but Omega doesn't offer a Seamaster with day/date, it didn't stop me from buying a Seamaster and won't stop me from buying another but even the Seamaster gets put down for the new cool day/date watch when it comes in.

I hate selling watches though, so that makes me a bit of a hoarder but I only have a hundred or so watches so I don't qualify by volume.
I buy watches just to put them in my display cases so I am not much of an enthusiast.
I guess that makes me a collector but my tastes are usually not very sophisticatedrev_smile.gif

I still admire the high end hand made pieces from basel but they are like beach front property in Hawaii, I only pay attention to what is within my reach!

I have to agree with canadajo, I am 60% enthusiast.....40% collector.

I definately have some I wouldn't part with, but I also have some really nice watches I have, and I suppose I will sooner or later part with them, if something else catches my eye.rev_smile.gif

Former "Accumulator"...I wouldn't go as far as to say hoarder.

Now I am trying to be a collector.
