I think I must be going crazy. I was looking around and ran across a picture of a TIMEX TX. Thought it was an interesting design and thought to check out pricing. $$400 plus for a TIMEX!? The backs say Movement design in Germany. Has some marketing guy fliped ? Who would pay that much for a watch designed in Germany by TIMEX and built most likely in China? They don't even mention where they are built on any part of the watch that I could see. I must be missing something.

The same could be said about Swatch many years ago....Timex has been trying to expand into the middle and upper markets...that is why they changed from Timex to TX and why they are buying up other brands. As I recall, they bought Versace a couple of years ago. Short, but interesting read: http://blog.breitlingsource.com/2007/12/02/the-future-of-timex-watches/ The Timex Group consists of several brands and licenses which now include: Vincent Berard, Versace, Versus, Valentino, Salvatore Ferragamo, Guess, Helix, Nautica, Mark Ecko, Avirex, Timex, TX, Acqua, and Carriage. They are spread among 5 divisions based in Switzerland and the USA.

I must be missing something. Romano, I'm pretty sure those watch movements are made in Germany as is final assembly. As Ken stated they are buying up companies to go upscale. They even bought a small company from a top notch custom watchmaker..name escapes me in which those watches sell well over 10K

"But the real surprise is the company that sits at the top of Timex Group, in the same way Breguet sits at the top of the Swatch Group, but with much less esteemed company so-to-speak. The company is Vincent Berard. The company makes less than 100 watches a year, priced at around $70,000 a pop, and is a premier small manufacture brand."

Rest assured that Timex is a Company that can be respected and trusted. If they are made in China they will tell you. Case in point (see the stickers on the exhibition back)

There was a big article about Timex and all their brands, in the Oct issue of WatchTime. It was an interesting read on their history and where they want to go as a company. There was an article about Vincent Berard and his manufacture also. I suggest checking it out if you can find it online.

Don't get me wrong I thought it was a nice enough looking watch to merit checking out the specs and the price. The pieces I saw are marked designed in Germany, I didn't see any markings as to location of manufacture . You are right though Timex products are usually quite clearly marked as to origin in their actual packaging. Its an image thing I suppose . For years Timex has been at the bottom of the watch market. Below Swatch and Armitron in price points. It is just reminds me of Volkswagen's failures at marketing the Phaeton. it was an impressive car to drive but as long as it was known and badged as a Volkswagen it was not going to move BMW and Mercedes buyers to purchase one certainly not in the $70K plus range. It is just hard to swallow thats all. None of those brands are watch brands though they are clothing brands and design brands looking to spread into other accesories. I think that's very different than buying up a dozen watch brands .

These markings are mandated by CBP (Customs and Border Protection), these are C.O. markings (Country of Origin). If the the C.O. is not clearly marked on the watch, then they have the right to reject the shipment. The larger watch brands know this, and mark accordingly. Just a little info!
