I work at a large financial services firm with a pretty substantial technology and infrastructure group. They are always concerned about inappropriate content, bandwidth hogs and the like. I have to review my employees e-mail on a weekly basis. Any sort of "chat" sites and external email are blocked. The internet police at work made some changes to the filters last night. Click on 3T in favorites today and the response is "access denied". Darn! Suffering withdrawl...

That su*ks... Been there though. Seems like the more they blocked "inappropriate sites", the more time people wasted looking for ways around the system or different "inappropriate sites"!

Not to sound like an old man, but I think its about time, so many people, mostly the younger generation, waste so much time on the Web, Texting, Paging, Talking, instead of working, part of the down fall of American Business. "Self Employed" Dont you all remember when we used to just go to work and actually focus on our work? "Hey you, get off my lawn" Im getting old

I hear ya Hucky, Being self employed myself. I usually sneak a peak when I am at my computer working up an estimate or waiting on parts or something. Get a load of this though. When I had employees, sometimes when it was slow I would mess around on the computer and find stuff for the workers to do. Even if it was working on my own stuff. They would get mad at me and thought they should be able to sit around and do nothing and I was to pay them for it. I was like " Who signs the paychecks around here?" When I got rid of everyone it was the best thing I did. Less headaches. Just cant find good help anymore.

Well I've managed a way around my organization's blocking of forums... I use one of partners networks to access 3T and other "non-productive" content. That's the advantage of having access to network closets! :D As far as the ethical connotations... Well, a great deal of my job is monitoring disparate systems to make sure data keeps flowing so that real time medical decisions can be made. Downtime or declination in service are not acceptable. Time is tissue. My goal is to be proactive, not reactive. Part of my monitoring includes watching 3T... well may be I've taken liberties but so be it! Hey I am off and on vacation yet I am jacked into the system right now and will be for the entirety of my vacation. Am I a slacker? Yeah a bit!

Yeah, but your a functioning Slacker, theres a difference smile8.gif Your the exception My complaint is with those that when I go to do business with them Im ignored while they finish talking with theyre friends or finish a text or an email etc... Thats my only complaint, Customer Service, it means everything.

Hiya huck and all - I 100% agree with you about customer service. Thriving economies or not, it is likely that only those copmanies who provide a feel-good experience and get repeat customers that will remain striong businesses in the long run IMHO. Perversely, at times like this it is usually the CS budget that suffers first. Have read many times that you should ditch everything BUT your CS when times are hard, or getting harder. My cell phone bill used to be in the hundreds a month, now it is in the thousand dollar plus bracket per month because of the need to have the rotten thing always at my side, downloading e-mails and receiving faxes and sending reports no matter where I am - 24 hours a day!! Yep - text, SMS, Wi-Fi, bluetooth, broadband (cable) and all the new stuff makes communication easier, but doesn't make a person more productive. Being productive used to mean doing your job properly and well. Now it just means that you spend less time texting, myspacing and facebooking than those around you! I am a bit sad to see that kids would rather text than talk, would rather send SMS language over the phone than speak English, and there is a whole generation of kids who seem to be losing the skills of meeting and interacting with real human beings.  Scott - I had a company with 170 employees when I was younger. Best thing I ever did was get a law degree as a mature-aged student and then start practicing law and dealing with other businesses on my own. It is more work, but at least it gets done properly! Even in booming Western Australia, where there are more jobs than people - where real estate prices are still solid and it is still way too easy to get a ridiculously huge mortgages, you just can't get good staff. Subcontractors are the biggest problem - they charge an arm and a leg, and they don't finish the work - they just go to the next one... it is a strange world. Thank goodness we can all defer to our hobby! Off the soap box now.... best wishes to all and keep the faith. IanM

About Me and My Job: I spend about 17 hour work days in a 6 day work week sometimes 7 in a hot,stressful and fast-paced environment in the kitchen of a restaurant. Reservations for 120 each Friday night and another 150 each Saturday night. If this is not enough, at the end of each of my work day - I am calculating labour costs,food costs and setting up for Sunday's Brunch and Dinner Menu. On top of that another 45 minutes to an hour doing payroll. By time I'm finished is 4:30 AM. I walk 40 minutes to my home and I arrive at 5:15 AM. At 6:15 AM each morning I call for a cab to get me to work and my day begins all over at 7 AM. I had to sacrifice my social life meaning marriage is out of the question and I've never reported a sick day unless a family member has died. In 1996, there were two deaths in the family and I had not made a request for the time off. I even work on my days off from 7 AM to 9 PM doing even inventory,talking to my food suppliers and make reports of equipment that needs to be repaired. This is all done before the following work week. Once that's done, I talk with the Chef Commis who is taking over from me to - help him with the dinner menu. By 5 PM I stay on to help expedite the food orders and get the food-runners ready as each meal is placed in the window. I've Been doing this for 20 years and now that I'm 37 - I can't see myself slowing down anytime soon. I consider myself to be a cook and not a chef, because all the kitchen staff call me by first name. I am the luckiest man in the world!
