So while Xmas shopping yesterday I ended up at a fabric store and bought some leather. I know this is completely Amateurish at BEST. I know it looks scrubby, but I did this while watching survivor last night. (i know) so the only time and effort put into it is about 3 hours and 5 bucks. My question is this to strapmakers, should I ever attempt another one, how do I stiffen up the leather, and also where would I get better leather at? and finally. Whats the best way to sew it? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And trust me, other than this forum, no one in public would ever see this attempt.

Try Tandy Leather, they sell everything for getting you started, including a good book about stitching and get yourself a stitching pony. http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/?sectionpath=1&processor=asp&asp_processor=store&action=setcountry&countryID=1033&return= for cutting your leather http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/3080-00.aspx?feature=Image_Link_17 for stitching http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/search/searchresults/3132-00.aspx?feature=Product_1&kw=stitching+pony for edge cotes, glueing etc... http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/home/department/Liquids/Liquids.aspx?navlocation=left look around and enjoy,

I cut my leather with a type of blade-knife and use a plexiglass plate as guide. To get regular stiching patern, a marking wheel is great and I punch the holes before stitching offcourse. I can't explain all because my english isn't good in those practical areas... It's just a hobby to me and I mostly made straps for myself: It is not hard, you have to be patient and methodic. I've learned from the net and myself after some prototypes. An exemple here ![]() Here also an exemple of what I've done with salmon skin and some practice on triple layer. ;) ![]()

Ooo, Hammer, that salmon skin one is AWESOME looking. Nice job. It was your picture of your 60mm Homage that popped in my head when I was at the fabric store the other day. the leather they were selling looked like the one you had on it and got me to thinking. So I appreciate it!

I bought all my leather from a shoe maker who was closing his shop. Bought a bit of everything in little quantities. Bought some black seal leather later on also...This is how it look on the grain: A bit like elephant... But lately, I've made a steel bracelet-crise so...:D ![]()

Ronin: That's the only other shot I got until now...The strap is great but a bit too little for my size of wrist even it fits so I took it out from the watch... That was the first one I've made like that and it was a bit missed: Cutted too short because I thought that the big size of the watch would compensate:?![]()

That strap looks very well made! Too bad it's too short for you. I have smaller wrist you know, and the same watch so... ![]() Last edited on Wed Dec 23rd, 2009 12:29 pm by DM71 |
