I dont know how many of you are into hockey, but tonight was my first game in person.  I usualy watch the Pens on tv just never had the urge to see a game in person.  The wife and I went to watch the Johnstown Chiefs play the Cincinati Cyclones in Jtown.  I dont know if you guys remember the movie "Slap Shot" with Paul Newman and the "HAnson" brothers?  It was filmed in the JTown War Memorial where we were.  I think the chiefs are a farm team for the Pens.  It was pretty cool.  One of our guys got a hat trick and a bunch of people threw thier hats oout on the ice.   The wife and I had a blast and are going to go again.  Only one more home game in the season.  Looks like they are going to make the palyoffs so maybe once more this season.  By the way, The Chiefs kicked  Cinci's a** 6 - 3.  yourock.gif

Just so happens that the Pens AHL team plays about 5 miles from my house in Wilkes Barre and it is a ball going to the game. If you ever get a chance to come to WB and see the baby pens play you should go....they sell out almost every game and the joint jumps. They have another good team this yr and are only a few pts out of 1st place with only a few games remaining.........

Love hockey. Being born and bread in Wisconsin I started playing at age 7 and finished at age 17. That's when I enrolled at Wisconsin, went to a Badger skate around and found though I was pretty good for my small town, I wasn't anywhere the skater or didn't have the size the REAL hockey players had.

When I was a kid we had an AHL team known as the Bobcats which featured our very own Hanson brother, the Pirphers. They were good guys and would come to schools and events.

The Bobcats are long gone and now we have another team known as the gamblers. I don't even know what league they are in! They are sort of a team for the best high school players before they declare a college.

Regardless, hockey is a blast to see live!! However I don't think it translates that well to TV unless you are Canadian!! subtlelaugh.gif

I enjoy Hockey myself. Still one wild game but not as bad as it was 20 to 25 years ago. As a kid my mom did not like me watching that barbaric game. LOL :D

Pax, up until I was about 23 my friends and I would play.  It wasn't any organized thing.  We made our own goals using PVC and netting.  We didnt use skates but we would beat the crap out of each other.  My one buddies dad worked for AT&T at the time and they had a building up in the mountain with a big parking lot that wasnt used on the weekends. It would be nice and icy there.  We had such  blast, I really miss those days.  Even though we were pretty  rough on each other we all were still friends at the end.  Oh, the good old days!
I did some reading today and the Johnstown Chiefs are an affiliate of the Boston Bruins and the Colorado Avalanche.

I grew up around hockey (Grand Forks, ND) but realized in 4th grade that I didn't have the coordination or agression necessary to compete, so I quit playing but continuted skating. My little brother played, he was pretty good. Great slapshot, but his specialty was what he called his "snapshot" which was much less windup than a slapshot and used more wrist, kind of a hybrid shot. Goalies love slapshots, you can see them coming from a mile away, but that snapshot was so quick it was tough on them. He is one of the asst coaches for the U of Tenn club hockey team, where the kids pay to play. They made the national tournament for ACHA div 3 this year, I was able to make it down to see them as they were just down the road in Rochester, MN. 4 days of non-stop hockey.

Mark, I think the league you are speaking of is Junior hockey, which is the top high-school kids where they are looked at for college hockey. Kind of like the movie Youngblood (mmmmm, Cynthia Gibb!). Fun to watch, we were able to catch the first part of a game down in Rochester. Holy crap those kids are fast!

Hockey's a great sport, huge here in Duluth. As a matter of fact, a week and a half ago our local U of MN Duluth Lady Bulldogs won the National Championship, beating Wisconsin. 5th time in 7 years! They are coached by Shannon Miller, who coached the winning Olympic womens hockey team a few years back.

I highly recommend it as a kids sport, and it's a blast to watch in person.

Here in Buffalo I grew up with the game and still play shinny (pick-up hockey) once or twice a week. At a spry 44 years I am rarely the oldest guy on the ice. When I lived in Philly, I used to play at Penn. There I was always the old man.

The best live hockey I saw this year was the Annual Scotty Bowman Cup played at the Sabres (HSBC) Arena. It is a high school all-star game between Buffalo and Rochester. These kids are fast and amazing.
Buffalo won. Again.

hockey is awesome to see in person .....its best watching right there ...it doesnt transfer onto TV like football or baseball ....it is hard to watch on TV, even if youve played the game and can anticipate the puck action....Being born in Canada, I was put on skates at age 2.... and have the pics to prove it !!!
