I'm getting some really strange results. I got the gel today and mixed it up as directed, but after about an hour in the solution, it only seems to have washed away previous efforts,if that's even possible. Really, the watch almost looks new again!

Steve, are you using a very concentrated solution? (the instructions called for a tablespoon of gel in 12 oz of water) And can you tell me how long you're leaving yours in the solution?

Thanks!

the aging process takes years, the chemicals are to get it started quicker. I think the brushed finish starts slower, but Ralf has one in Thailand and it is getting darker quicker due to the humidity and the salty air from the ocean.

You need to be sure and wash the watch to remove your oils that are covering the surface.

mine is also lightly sand blasted, something I did myself in the garage, then I washed it, then treated it about 6 times over 5-6 hours with various water temps, and also outside allowing the sunny air to hit it for a few hours before washing off the chemicals... then I did it again about 1 week later.

OK,thanks, I did clean it well before treating it,but I also washed it off thoroughly afterward. I should maybe have let it soak in a while. I'll continue to play with it and see what happens, or I may just go natural with it,because I like it fine as is and it will get plenty of salt air and water next summer.

Jswing,

You def. "need" to be patient with the process...I am 2 days into mine and I am dunking both my Zenton (Brushed) and Benarus (Sand blasted) at the same time with the same amount of gel, same water temp.

The Benarus is getting darker quicker compared to the brushed. Brushed seems more stubborn than sand blasted. But still no where near Steve's color

Even though I cleaned both well I...I used a soft brush and dish soap, gloves etc..I still had finger print smudges after the patina around the Zenton Bezel...It looked horrible but erased them with wet baking soda...This worked well but lightened the entire area...So will need to dunk again and perhaps blend with light baking soda so the patina is more uniform.  I plan to add more dishsoap and scrub more before the third dunk.

For clarification when I say dunk...I mean submerge the entire watch in patina gel for at least 5 hrs.

Tonite I plan for a 3rd dunk and during the weekend I plan to dunk overnight.

Hope that helps and photo's to come later....

/Amer

Cool stuff guys!  I have only had personal experience with the egg process, and with that process you are looking at hours of total exposure in the bag.

With the liver of sulfur gel solution (which should be water mixed with a little bit of the gel), I'm very surprised to hear you guys talking about soaking the watch for hours as my understanding of that process is that it works quite fast with a hot solution -seconds or at most minutes (I've read the solution will work MUCH slower with a cool or room temp solution).

I do have some liver of sulfur gel that I have received at home, but just haven't had the opportunity yet to try it. Maybe our resident expert Scott (timesofplenty) thumbsup.gif could chime in, but I thought that when he did the liver of sulfur process, the results were quite fast.

I would also agree with the comments that a blasted bronze patinas more quickly than a brushed or polished finish...(makes sense in that the metal is more 'opened up' I guess).  I have also read that it is recommended that you brush/blast/polish the metal within 30 minutes of doing the liver of sulfur exposure for maximum results. ...but hey, no personal experience yet, hope to try it out over the next week or so.

Here's my series 1 Moray with the egg process only (different UNI5275 bronze though versus the series II):

Thanks Amer, look forward to seeing your pics. I did fully submerge mine in a dish of the solution but I only left it in for a little over an hour. I'll continue to play around with it.

My only point of reference is a few bronze buckles I treated in the months while waiting for the Moray, and those things developed a lot of patina quickly. I have no idea what alloy they are though.

But yes, Scott has gotten great results. I know at one point he used the liver of sulpher rocks, because he was kind enough to send me some, but I didn't use them for a month or more so they may have lost some of their potency. Or I may have just botched the procedure. Now I have some gel. I didn't heat the water, but got it as hot as our tap water gets. I guess it's a lot of trial and error.

BTW, when you open up the gel, be prepared for the smell!!!! Just about knocked me over.-)

Heya Stew,

It is for sure not going fast....Perhaps the temps.....Mine start hot/warm when dunked....It could also be the ratio of mix, 2 teaspoons gel/12 oz of water. (Plus to be honest I have no idea how long the stuff was sitting on the shelf prior to shipping...Could be a small factor)

Also yours is UNI VS. the second gen is CU....Not sure if the properties react differently to the mix of sulfur...Look at the silver bracelet in Steve's pix or the youtube video
https://www.cooltools.us/Cool-Tools-Liver-of-Sulfur-in-Gel-Form-p/pol-800parent.htm?1=1&CartID=0

Color changed pretty quick..I also wonder if density/mass has anything to do with it even though the outer layer is what patina's

I am not a metal specialist nor chemist so my points above could mean nothing....I honestly prefer the natural way...hence what I did with the 2 Nimo's so this is a fun experiment for me...Ultimately no rush on my part.

/Amer
