So I sold a Sea Gull manual wind on another forum, transaction was smooth.  Then today I get this

"Hi Mario,

I have just received the watch, I was pleased at first, but when I pulled the crown to set time, the crown falls out! This should not have happened if the watch is in good condition, I have had over 20 watches in my collection and this is the first time such a thing has happened!

I will have to send this watch to a watchmaker to fix the problem with the crown, it will cost me in excess of $50. I think its only fair that you refund me at least $50 for the repair.

I am very disappointed with this purchase.."

When I sent the watch it was in perfect working order, and at about 95% condition.  Also looking at the tracking information, the watch is still in transit...so just that alone seems fishy.  I mentioned this to the guy in my reply and also asked to see a picture of what he is talking about.  So I'll see what he replies with.  Anyway has anyone experienced something like this before?

I've pulled a stem out of a watch before on a pre-owned but did not bother the previous owner. And it only cost me $15 to have my watch guy put it back in.

Take out and put back in the wind stem, is an easy procedure wich a lot of watch lovers is able to do. Ask money before any problem check by qualified watchmaker is not correct.

Smells bad to me. The crown should be screwed on the stem(then locked on it with loctite most likely) so the crown could be simply screwed again on the stem with some loctite to lock it back definitly.
Or he means that the stem loosen from the movement and the crown came out with the stem attached to it??
Wierd: He only speak about the crown.
Ask pictures: Because the watch shouldn't be stated as in transit!

Crowns and stems can come out. I have had it happen also after receiving a second hand watch. With the help of 3T, I got it back in myself.

You can simply offer to refund the money upon receipt of the watch. $50 seems high to re-insert a stem/crown unless it is broken off somehow. Then every market is different. And, it is a Chinese made movement which might make some reluctant to mess with it.

But, if you offer to refund the person's money after you get the watch back, that should help diffuse the person's fears. If he/she says no, I want $50! Then I would be suspicious.

Thanks everyone for the advice on the crown and crown stem problem.  I sent the guy a message asking for pictures of the crown and watch, as well as a scanned copy of the receipt from the watchmaker.  Also asked him to describe the packaging of the watch in detail, so that I'd know he actually had it.  This was all yesterday afternoon around 2:00pm or so, since then no reply from the guy.  He is in Singapore, I am in Seoul, one hour difference I believe.  If there is no reply by I'd say today or tomorrow, then I am assuming this is how this guy tries to make a quick 50 bucks.

I also agree. But just as a note....don't be too reliant on tracking info. Sometimes it may be erroneous. McWright's (Mike's) suggestion is perfect.

Right, so here is round 2...I get this picture from him

Is it just me or does it look like he unscrewed the case back and removed the crown?

and here's what he says:
"By the way, I realize that I cannot even set the time on this watch as the crown is not able to engage and hence totally not usable! As it will costs me $100 to fix this watch in Singapore,"...

He wants a refund, which is fine, but after I refund the money what's to keep this guy from just keeping the watch and not sending it back...No trust with this guy.  So I am thinking to tell him that I will buy it back from him for the amount he paid me, so that way if he doesn't send the watch I can file a case with paypal...What do you guys think?  And thanks again for all the replies and advice...

I never experienced myself but I guess that's it's possible that in the shacking of the transport, the screw locking the stem in the case, get loose and then the stem would be free to go...
That would be the only natural explanation.
Anyway: He kind of knows that you will pay him back as you allready sent him the watch after his own payment.
So get the watch back, sent with tracking number and pay him after that...

I would only refund money upon actual receipt of the watch back in my hands.

I sold a watch to a guy on ebay. I was trusting (a mistake in this case). He claimed it arrived with scratches on the crystal. Since it was only $75, I Paypaled the money back and told him to ship it. He kept the watch and told me to bite the big one.

That said, it should not be a big deal to put the crown and stem back in on that watch. It is a 17-jewel hand wind model and it should be relatively simple to secure it back in.
